Why should you support the Blog? And who am I?

My name is Reece. I grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia and spent much of my formative years travelling around the world before moving to Toronto, Ontario to pursue a degree in Computer Science at the University of Toronto.

University College at the University of Toronto.

I graduated from UofT into the Covid-19 pandemic and decided to give up my stable software job for a crack at working as a YouTuber, and now I run a YouTube channel with over 250,000 subscribers where I talk about public transportation, a longtime passion of mine.

In large part because of my YouTube channel, I’ve gotten to work as a transportation planner on a number of interesting projects, and I’ve also been able to connect with all manners of transportation professionals and advocates — from planners, to engineers, to operators from around the globe — which has only deepened my knowledge and appreciation for the little-discussed nuances of public transport. I also spend a lot of time writing long threads about public transit issues on Twitter and Mastodon, which inspired me to create this blog.

I believe good transportation — and public transportation in particular — are critical to creating vibrant, safe, environmentally-friendly, accessible, equitable, and affordable cities. And I also believe well-functioning cities are the foundation of so much of our modern lives. We have incredible opportunities to solve many of our cities’ great challenges at once through sustainable transportation!

To be clear, public transit has not become my only interest. Over the years, I’ve spent periods of time deeply interested in electrical infrastructure, airports, skyscrapers, and information technology — and I’ll write periodic Wednesday Substack articles exploring different topics. This Substack will be a hub for all the things I’m interested in, and a wide variety of topics that I’ll cover with the same thoughtful approach as I cover public transport.
